Are you a compulsive worker-outer? Haha!
You have it ingrained in your head that if you workout more, you’ll get to the body you want faster?
I’ve got some news for you that might bring you some relief.
When I found this out, my whole life changed.
I used to spend hours in the gym lifting weights and doing excessive amounts of cardio.
The issue with this is that you can absolutely overexert your body and force it into a survival mode.
If you are pushing your body day after day, not allowing for rest days, adequate sleep, proper nutrition, your body will jump into your defense.
What this looks like is a plateau. You’re stressing your body in ways it’s not meant to be and it’s bringing your progress to a halt.
Our body has a hormone that we release as a stress response called cortisol. If our body releases too much of this hormone, it will hoard all of the body fat you currently have.
It will step in and say “hey! stop it, you’re pushing us too hard and we don’t trust you. We are going to hold onto all the fat we have to survive because you’re not feeding us enough and you’re beating us up all the time.”
Think about this. When you are in the gym lifting weights or if you’re running for cardio. What are we doing? We are breaking our body down and tearing our muscle fibers up.
Then what do most people do…they think I need to get back in the gym and push harder. So there they are the next day doing the same thing.
Where exactly are we allowing our bodies to recover and build new lean tissue! HELLO
You build muscle, sculpt your body, and make progress while we’re recovering. This means proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and resting muscles.
Is this making sense? For me, I thought HECK YEAH! If I want to reach my goals I need to sleep more and eat more.
YEP! Don’t be afraid of rest days, or sleeping in when your body is telling you it’s tired. They are just as important as the time you spend in the gym.
Now back to my nap!
