I have a story and a secret for you that will change everything.
Have you ever felt like you were doing everything right and working so hard, but you just couldn’t break through that plateau? Chances are you did one of two things…1. You just gave up that time or 2. You started eating less and working out even more.
Now here’s the problem. Both of these options leave you frustrated, confused and ultimately not reaching your goals.
Let me explain what happens, and what you do differently to completely trick the system into breaking right through a plateau.
I once had a client who was on a significant weight loss journey. She was losing weight consistently and we were all so excited about the progress she was making. After about two months into the process, we came upon the dreaded plateau. She was eating the proper food, with the proper macros I gave her, and she was working out consistently every single day.
You could imagine how baffled she may have been knowing that she was doing everything right, and had a good amount of weight to lose. Most people in this situation would choose one of the two options that we shared above, but what I’m about to share with you was the exact trick she needed and that you can use to quickly to not only overcome a plateau but also feel excited when you hit one!
So this is how our body works. When we consume more calories than we burn; we gain weight. When we consume the same amount of calories that we burn; we maintain weight. When we consume fewer calories than we burn; we lose weight. Simple right? yes…but there’s a catch.
Our bodies are so smart and adaptive. They’re only going to work as hard as they need to. If we are in a calorie deficit for too long, our bodies will simply lower our metabolism to meet the level that we are consuming & because its job is to protect us, it will hold onto all the bodyfat that we have knowing that we aren’t feeding it that much food. This completely brings our progress to a halt.
If you start eating even less or start working out, even more, you are digging a deeper hole. So what do we need to do? We have to allow our bodies to relax by cutting back some of the exercises so that we aren’t expending so much energy, and increase our calories to trigger our metabolism to rise back to a safe level. After you do this for anywhere from 4-7 days, we simply drop back down into a safe calorie deficit and allow the progress to continue.
So what happened with my client that I was referring to, that wasn’t losing an ounce. I increased her carbs by 40% and she wasn’t allowed to work out for 7 days. I only allowed her to walk, sleep in, and eat more food. The following week she weighed in and she had dropped 13 pounds on the scale. Now, this is not typical as she had over 100 pounds to lose still, and was holding on to lots of water, but nonetheless, it propelled her to several weeks of exciting progress.
We allowed her stress response hormones to relax, gave her body the nutrition it wanted, and it thanked us with a big drop. Now we have seen this work over and over again for hundreds of people including ourselves. I know it is contrary to what you may have been taught before, but try it out and be amazed.
This is truly the eat more, lose more solution!
